Scalp reconstruction is a surgical procedure used on patients who have congenital or acquired partial or full-thickness scalp abnormalities. Tissue expansion is a procedure that employs mechanical stimulation to initiate tissue proliferation in order to produce soft tissue for reconstructive purposes.
It involves implanting a prosthesis that gradually expands due to the addition of saline, resulting in an increase in the surface area of the underlying soft tissue. The stretched skin first results from the displacement of interstitial fluid, the fragmentation of elastic fibres, the development of viscoelastic changes in the collagen, and the recruitment of nearby mobile soft tissue.
The patient’s recovery is determined by the severity of the condition and the sort of treatment modality chosen to address it.
Mrs. Tirupalamma from Kadapa, underwent a Scalp Reconstruction with Tissue Expansion, under the supervision of Dr. Sasikanth Maddu, Consultant Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.
