Hematologic malignancies, often known as blood cancers, develop when abnormal cells proliferate and multiply uncontrollably, interfering with the regular blood cells’ ability to produce more healthy blood cells and defend the body against harmful infections.
An allogeneic bone marrow transplant is a medical procedure to replace a patient’s damaged bone marrow with healthy cells from a compatible donor. The donor’s bone marrow is collected through aspiration, while the patient undergoes chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy to suppress their immune system. The healthy cells are then infused into the patient’s bloodstream and travel to the bone marrow where they grow and produce new blood cells.Â
Recovery can be challenging, with side effects such as nausea, fatigue, and infection risk, and ongoing monitoring is required to ensure proper function of the new bone marrow. Despite the challenges, this procedure can be life-saving for patients with certain disorders.
