A spine tumour is an abnormal growth of cells that develops on or near the spine. Spine tumours can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous) and can occur in any part of the spine, including the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar regions.
Surgery to remove a spine tumour typically involves making an incision in the skin and then using specialised instruments to access the tumour. The surgeon will then carefully remove as much of the tumour as possible without causing damage to the surrounding healthy tissue or the spinal cord. Depending on the location and size of the tumour, the surgery may be done through an open incision or through a minimally invasive procedure.
Recovery after spine tumour surgery can be prolonged, with varying outcomes depending on tumour type, location and patient’s health. Patients are monitored for several days in the hospital, and they will undergo physical therapy to regain strength and mobility. Follow-up appointments and adherence to the medical team’s advice are important to ensure proper recovery. Patients may take several weeks to months to fully recover.
