A traumatic brain injury occurs as a result of brain dysfunction caused by an external force or a violent blow to the head. TBI can result in a variety of physical and psychological symptoms, which may appear immediately following the traumatic event or days or weeks later.
TBIs can vary in severity and may be classified as mild, moderate, or severe. While more severe traumatic brain injuries can cause bleeding, torn tissues, bruises, and other physical brain damage, mild traumatic brain injuries may only temporarily affect the brain cells. These injuries can have long-term consequences or even result in death.
Diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in which the brain moves and rotates within the skull as a result of a traumatic external impact, damaging the brain’s long connecting fibres known as axons. This causes a number of secondary effects with varying degrees of severity. Treatment options include cognitive behavioural therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and physical therapy.
