Thymectomy is performed to treat thymomas, which are tumours that develop in the thymus gland, as well as myasthenia gravis, a neuromuscular disorder associated with thymomas. Surgical robotic thymectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove the thymus gland.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the chest and inserts a robotic instrument, which is controlled by the surgeon through a console. The robotic instrument removes the thymus gland using small surgical instruments while providing the surgeon with a magnified view of the surgical site.
Recovery is typically faster than traditional open surgery, with patients often being able to return to normal activities within a few weeks. Pain and discomfort can be managed with pain medication, and patients may need to stay in the hospital for a few days for monitoring.
