Carotid endarterectomy is a procedure used to treat carotid artery disease, which is caused by the buildup of fatty, waxy deposits in one of the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries are blood vessels on both sides of the neck (carotid arteries).Â
Patients are given local or general anesthesia before the procedure, which consists of making an incision along the front of the neck, opening the carotid artery, and removing the plaques that are clogging the artery. Plaque removal can improve blood flow and lower the risk of stroke. Another technique, known as eversion carotid endarterectomy, involves cutting the carotid artery and turning it inside out before removing the plaque.
Mr. M. Mohammad Shakebul Hasan from Bangladesh underwent internal carotid artery reconstruction surgery at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Prakash Goura, Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon, and Dr. Dayakar Rao, Consultant Surgical Oncologist.Â
