Neurofibromas are benign tumours that develop on nerve tissue alongside blood vessels. They can be cutaneous neurofibromas (those that develop on nerves in the skin), subcutaneous neurofibromas (those that develop beneath the skin), or those that develop deeper in the body, such as the abdomen, chest, and spine.
A neurofibroma can develop in people who have no known cause or who have the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis type 1. Typically, the symptoms associated with a neurofibroma may be very mild or nonexistent. However, if the tumour presses against or grows within nerves, the affected area may experience pain or numbness.
Treatment is usually not required for single tumours that do not cause symptoms. However, if the tumour is causing symptoms, surgery may be considered, and the type of surgery is determined by the location and size of your tumour. The goal of surgery is to remove as much of the tumour as possible while causing the least amount of nerve damage.
