A coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) is a surgical procedure used to treat coronary heart disease. It diverts blood around narrowed or clogged parts of the major arteries to improve blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart.
A section of healthy blood vessels, known as a “graft,” is removed by the surgeon during the procedure. This is frequently done from inside the chest wall or from the lower leg. The surgeon attaches the graft ends below the blocked heart artery, creating a new pathway for blood to flow around the blockage. Depending on the number of blockages in the heart, more than one graft may be used during a CABG.
It typically takes 3 to 6 hours to complete the procedure, and recovery time ranges from 6 to 12 weeks. CABG is a major surgery with risks and complications such as irregular heart rhythms, bleeding, infections, confusion or delirium, kidney problems, stroke, and heart attack.
Mr. Dyckeir Chinosengwa from Zimbabwe successfully underwent Coronary Artery Bypass Graft at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Vikram Reddy, Sr. Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
