What is male infertility?
Male infertility refers to a male’s inability to cause pregnancy in a fertile female. Male fertility depends on the quantity and quality of sperm. Lower numbers of sperm in the ejaculate or poor quality of sperm can both lead to male infertility. Both the partners should undergo testing if the couple fails to conceive after a year of unprotected sex.
Male infertility treatment
Considering the family history and personal health profile, the doctor may recommend certain procedures that will help to conceive. These may include:
- Hormone treatment: If the condition is present due to hormonal imbalance, it can be treated with medicine.
- Surgery: Sperm retrieval, vasectomy reversal, or correction of varicocele are some instances where surgery may be required.
- Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART): Sperm is collected from the ejaculate or through surgical means and used to perform intrauterine insemination (IUI), In-vitro Fertilization (IVF), or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
With a combination of ARTs, chances of conception can be boosted to a vast degree.
