End-stage kidney disease occurs when the kidneys lose approximately 90% of their ability to function normally, resulting in the accumulation of abnormally high levels of fluid and waste, increased blood pressure, and kidney failure. Treatment requires either a kidney transplant or machine-assisted dialysis in order to maintain health and live longer.
A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure that involves placing a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor into a patient whose kidneys no longer function properly. Kidney transplantation, when compared to dialysis, is associated with a higher quality of life, a lower risk of death, fewer dietary restrictions, and a lower treatment cost, and it is frequently the treatment of choice for kidney failure.
