All You Need To Know About Cataract

Cataract refers to the condition of the eye in which the lens of the eye becomes damaged and cloudy resulting in blurred vision. It may affect one or both eyes. Cataract surgery is aimed at removing the cloudy lens in the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens, or intraocular lens in an attempt to restore clear vision. It is one of the most frequently carried out and successful surgeries across the globe. The success rate is more than 98%. This surgery is an outpatient procedure i.e. patients are free to go home after surgery.

Certain conditions that may lead to the need for this surgery are age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye problems, and other common eye conditions.

Types Of Cataract Surgery

There are 4 major types of cataract surgery. They are:

  • Phacoemulsification: This is the most common procedure of surgery. It takes less than half an hour, with a minimal amount of sedation. In this procedure, a small incision is made around the edge of the cornea which creates an opening through the membrane that surrounds the lens. A small ultrasonic probe is inserted into this opening to break up the lens into small fragments using sound waves, these sound waves act as a jackhammer. The probe tip contains an attachment which is then used for suction of the broken fragments. An intraocular lens implant is then placed in the lens capsule in the eye by using a hollow tube through the corneal incision.
  • Extracapsular Cataract Surgery: This surgery is used in the case of highly advanced cataracts that are too dense for phacoemulsification. In this procedure, a bigger incision is made to remove the cataract in one piece as opposed to removing the fragments. After the removal of the cataract, the intraocular lens is placed in the same capsule. It is followed by a number of sutures to seal the wound and an eye patch is often recommended.
  • Intracapsular Cataract Surgery: This surgery requires an even bigger incision as compared to the other two surgeries in which the entire lens along with the surrounding capsule is removed. The intraocular lens is then placed in front of the iris.
  • Laser Cataract Surgery: It is also known as Refractive Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery. It is an advanced type of surgery that uses femtosecond laser technology which brings a new level of precision and accuracy to the surgery. The first step is a corneal incision, followed by anterior capsulotomy in which the front part of the capsule is removed to give direct access to the cloudy lens to the surgeon. The laser then softens the lens as it breaks it into fragments. The intraocular lens is then placed in position.

The average cost of cataract surgery in Bangalore is Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 1,80,000. Yet, it depends upon multiple factors, depending on factors like the type of procedure, hospital stay, and surgeon’s expertise. At Yashoda Hospitals, we not only offer expert surgical care but also provide complete support with travel, accommodation, language assistance, post-surgery care, insurance guidance, and transparent cost estimates to make your journey smooth and stress-free.

While cataracts cannot be reversed, you can take steps to prevent or slow their progression. Protect your eyes from UV light by wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. Avoid smoking, as it increases the risk of cataracts. Maintain a healthy diet rich in antioxidants, particularly vitamins C and E, found in citrus fruits, tomatoes, and broccoli. Additionally, adopt a healthy lifestyle by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and limiting screen time. If you have diabetes or other high-risk conditions, consult your doctor about medications that may help delay cataracts.

You don’t have to wait for cataract surgery; it can be performed even in the early stages of cataracts. In fact, it’s often advisable to have the surgery as soon as vision problems arise.

No, cataracts cannot return after surgery, as the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one that doesn’t develop cataracts. However, the capsule surrounding the artificial lens can become cloudy over time, leading to a condition known as posterior capsular opacification or secondary cataract. This complication occurs in a small percentage of patients.

Cataracts are most likely to develop in older adults, particularly those over 60, although they can occur at any age. Key risk factors include health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, as well as environmental factors such as excessive sun exposure, smoking, alcohol consumption, and steroid use.

A secondary cataract is treated with a YAG laser capsulotomy, a quick and painless in-office procedure that restores vision. The process begins with eye drops to numb and dilate the eye, followed by the use of a YAG laser to create a small opening in the cloudy lens capsule, allowing light to pass through the intraocular lens (IOL) and improving vision.

Most people experience little to no pain during cataract surgery due to local anesthetic eye drops and, in some cases, a sedative to promote relaxation. While you may feel some pressure or discomfort during the procedure, pain is minimal. After surgery, your eye may feel gritty or tender, but over-the-counter pain medication can help alleviate this.

Cataract surgery can be performed on both eyes simultaneously through immediate sequential bilateral cataract surgery (ISBCS), but this approach carries risks such as blindness and infection. Alternatively, delayed sequential bilateral cataract surgery (DSBCS) involves removing cataracts from each eye days, weeks, or months apart. The choice between these methods depends on individual needs and factors like visual habits, travel constraints, preference for minimizing hospital visits, and ensuring safe recovery. Consulting your eye doctor will help determine the best option for you.
