FAQ’S
What does maze stand for in cardiac surgery?

A surgical technique known as a maze is used to treat atrial fibrillation. A doctor uses heat or cold to create a maze-like pattern of scar tissue in the upper chambers of the heart. Alternatively, the doctor could use a scalpel to make several small incisions.

How long does it take for a Maze procedure to work?

Within six to eight weeks, most patients notice a reduction in symptoms and a completely corrected heartbeat within three to six months.

How successful is the Maze procedure?

Surgical maze procedures have a high success rate, with 70 to 95 percent of patients remaining free of atrial fibrillation for the long term following the operation. After the operation, some people can also need medication to help regulate their abnormal heart rhythm.

How long does a maze procedure take?

The procedure takes about three hours. Maze surgery can be combined with other procedures to correct all complications in patients who have atrial fibrillation and other heart problems such as coronary artery disease or valve disease. During the surgery, certain patients can obtain a pacemaker.

Is the Maze procedure the same as ablation?

Atrial fibrillation is treated surgically with the maze technique. It is also known as a surgical ablation. To create scar tissue, the surgeon may use tiny incisions, radio waves, freezing, or microwave or ultrasound energy.
