FAQ’S
Is removing a kidney stone considered surgery?

Some kidney stones move on their own and do not need care. Other stones that are painful or get trapped in the urinary tract can need surgery to be removed. If the stone is very big and won’t exit on its own, then the patient will need a procedure or surgery to remove it.

Is kidney stone removal surgery painful?

When the stone fragments move, you will experience pain and nausea. This can happen right after treatment and last anywhere from four to eight weeks. If sound waves were used to treat the stone, you may have some bruises on your back or side. You can also experience discomfort in the treatment area.

What size of kidney stone requires surgery?

Surgical care is generally recommended for stones greater than 0.5 centimetres in diameter, as well as patients who have failed to respond to conservative treatment. The recent advances in kidney stone removal techniques are minimally invasive and are highly successful.

Which operation is best for kidney stones?

For larger stones that are not likely to pass on their own, the nephrologist may advise kidney stone removal procedures and surgeries.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL): Ultrasound shock waves are used to crush the larger stones which can then be easily eliminated through the urine.

Alternative procedures include:

  • Ureteroscopy: Small kidney stones can be removed by a doctor by inserting a tube along the ureter. For larger stones, doctors may also make use of lasers within the ureteroscope to dissolve or break them down.
  • Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
  • Open surgery: Open surgery or operation is rarely used to remove kidney stones anymore. Doctors may advise open surgery only when stones are stuck, blocking urine flow, causing extreme pain and bleeding.
What happens after kidney stone surgery?

Valve replacement surgery, like all major heart procedures, has the potential for complications such as bleeding, infection, heart attack, and stroke. There are also the anticipated benefits of reduced symptoms, increased longevity, and improved quality of life.
