FAQ’S
How long does it take to recover from appendix surgery?

One of the main advantages of appendix keyhole surgery is that the recovery time is shorter and most people can be discharged from the hospital a few days after the operation. If this procedure is performed promptly, the patient can go home within 24 hours after the surgery. While with open appendix surgery, it may take up to a week for the patient to get discharged.

There may be pain and bruising at the site of surgery for the first few days, but it gets better over time since a doctor may prescribe pain killers if needed. Before getting discharged, healthcare practitioners will advise on how to care and what activities to avoid. Although the patient needs to avoid strenuous activity for 4-6 weeks after an open surgery and can resume normal activities in a few weeks.

How painful is appendix surgery?

Pain at the incision site and in the abdomen is common but minimal after an appendix surgery. An individual can also experience pain in the shoulders due to carbon dioxide added in the abdomen during the procedure. The patient may get relief from the shoulder pain usually within 24 to 48 hours. Your Appendicitis Surgery Doctor can recommend certain precautions to relieve pain such as;

  • Using painkillers
  • Using ice on the incisions
Do’s and don'ts after appendix surgery?

Do’s after the surgery:

  • Doctors recommend that a patient should be as active as the body allows, after surgery.
  • The patient can go up and down the stairs on the day of the surgery.
  • A patient can go back to normal activities about a week to 2 weeks after the surgery.
  • To reduce pain, support the abdomen with a pillow or other soft object during any abdominal movements.

Don’ts after the surgery:

  • Heavy lifting (more than 10Kgs) or heavy work should be avoided for at least 4 weeks after surgery.
  • A patient who has undergone open surgery may need a longer time for recovery after the surgery.
  • Do not wear any tight or rough clothing.
  • Avoid taking bath until stitches are removed.
Which doctor treats appendix?

A person with appendicitis can initially consult their family physicians. However, the person is usually assessed or diagnosed by a general surgeon or an Appendicitis Surgery Doctor. Once appendicitis is identified, the general surgeon recommends surgery if necessary.

Is appendix surgery considered major surgery?

Appendectomy is a common surgery performed to treat appendicitis. It involves the removal of the appendix either through open surgery or laparoscopic surgery by a General surgeon who can remove the appendix depending on the severity and medical history of the patient.
