FAQ’S
What happens if one adrenal gland is removed?

Adrenalectomy is a surgery performed to remove one or both adrenal glands. Most adrenal tumors are not cancerous. If the tumor produces hormones or is large in size, usually more than 2 inches or 4 to 5 centimeters, then the individual may need to undergo surgery to remove the adrenal gland. If the tumor is cancerous, then the patient may also need an adrenalectomy. If both adrenal glands are removed, then the patient may need to take hormonal medications. If only one gland is removed, the other gland can take over the functioning of the kidney.

What type of surgeon removes adrenal glands?

Adrenalectomy is the surgical removal of the adrenal gland with a tumor. A Surgical Endocrinologist is a surgeon who specializes in the treatment of endocrine tumors through surgery.

Can you live without your adrenal gland?

Yes. An individual can survive even after removal of adrenal gland. Yet, they might need to take certain medications to reduce high blood pressure. Usually, recovery from adrenalectomy takes two to four weeks after laparoscopic or open surgery depending on the type of surgery performed.

What are the side effects of having your adrenal gland removed?

There aren’t many side effects recorded after removing the adrenal glands. Some symptoms are rarely noticed:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Tired
  • Elevated serum potassium levels.
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Infections
  • Increased stress levels
  • High levels of cortisol

The patient will need to take a synthetic form of aldosterone for a few weeks until other glands, such as the pituitary gland, restore natural production of aldosterone.

How serious is adrenal gland surgery?

As with any surgery, there are certain risks involved in adrenal gland removal surgery as well. These include:

  • Bleeding
  • Changes in the blood pressure
  • Infection
  • Pneumonia
  • Damage to the intestine, spleen, pancreas or liver (rarely)

There is also a small risk associated with anesthesia. However, the relative risk of complications is much lower and generally outweighs the benefits of surgery.

Is the adrenal gland removed during nephrectomy?

In a radical nephrectomy, the surgeon removes the entire kidney. Sometimes, the doctor might remove additional structures such as the uterus or other structures like the adrenal gland or lymph nodes.
