What is Glossectomy Surgery?
Glossectomy is a surgical procedure to partially or completely remove the tongue. The surgeon may also perform a neck dissection to remove the affected lymph nodes. Glossectomy is the most effective treatment for oral cancer or severe trauma to the tongue.
Types of Glossectomy
There are several types of glossectomy, depending on the extent of the surgery and the portion of the tongue that needs to be removed. The main types include:
- Partial Glossectomy: This involves removing only a part of the tongue, usually to treat small tumours or lesions. The goal is to preserve as much of the tongue’s function as possible.
- Hemiglossectomy: This involves removing half of the tongue. It is often done when the tumour is located on one side of the tongue.
- Total Glossectomy: This involves removing the entire tongue. It is typically done when the tumour is large or has spread extensively within the tongue.
- Subtotal Glossectomy: This involves removing most of the tongue, but leaving a small portion of the tongue base intact. It is done in cases where preserving some tongue function is important.
- Glossectomy with Neck Dissection: In some cases, a glossectomy may be combined with a neck dissection to remove lymph nodes in the neck that may be affected by cancer.
