What is Endometrial Ablation?
Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat heavy or abnormal uterine bleeding by destroying the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium), which is responsible for menstrual flow. The procedure is performed using techniques such as heat, cold, microwave energy, or radiofrequency and does not involve any external cuts.
It is typically done as a day-care procedure with a quick recovery, allowing most women to return to normal activities within a few days. After the procedure, menstrual bleeding is significantly reduced, and in some cases, it may stop completely. However, it is not suitable for women who wish to have children in the future, as pregnancy after endometrial ablation can be unsafe.
Types of Endometrial Ablation:
Endometrial ablation can be performed using several techniques, each designed to destroy the uterine lining and reduce menstrual bleeding safely. The choice of method depends on the patient’s condition, uterine anatomy, and the doctor’s expertise.
1. Thermal Balloon Ablation In this method, a soft balloon is inserted into the uterus and filled with heated fluid. The heat spreads evenly across the uterine lining, destroying it uniformly. It is simple, effective, and commonly used for women with a normal-shaped uterus.
2. Radiofrequency Ablation This is one of the most widely used modern techniques. A device with a mesh-like structure expands inside the uterus and delivers controlled radiofrequency energy. It removes the lining quickly (usually within a few minutes) and provides consistent results with minimal complications.
3. Cryoablation Cryoablation uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy the endometrial tissue. A probe is inserted into the uterus, and freezing cycles are applied. This method allows controlled destruction and may cause less discomfort in some patients.
4. Microwave Ablation In this technique, microwave energy is used to generate heat that destroys the uterine lining. It is fast and effective, especially in cases where other methods may not be suitable.
5. Hydrothermal Ablation Heated saline (fluid) is circulated inside the uterus under direct visual guidance using a hysteroscope. The hot fluid destroys the lining evenly and is useful in treating irregular uterine cavities.
6. Electrosurgical Ablation (Resectoscopic Method) This method uses a hysteroscope along with an electrical loop or rollerball to remove or coagulate the uterine lining directly. It requires more surgical skill and is usually performed under direct visualization, making it suitable for complex cases.
All these techniques aim to achieve the same goal, reducing or stopping abnormal uterine bleeding, but differ in the way energy (heat, cold, or electrical) is used. Your doctor will select the most appropriate method based on safety, effectiveness, and your individual health needs.
