What is Hysterectomy?

While every woman fights fierce battles in her life, embracing her journey with strength and courage, there are seasons when her cycles are painful and irregular due to various underlying conditions affecting the uterus. When medical therapies are no longer improving the symptoms, a Hysterectomy, removal of the uterus, becomes more than a medical procedure, and while it’s a challenging decision, it restores peace, relieves discomfort, and enhances overall quality of life.

We at Yashoda Hospitals are among India’s best hospitals for hysterectomy surgery. We carry you through this phase of chronic pelvic pain and heavy bleeding, extending our top-notch and compassionate services through advanced technology coupled with an expert team.

When is it required?

It is recommended in the following conditions that don’t improve despite the medical treatments:

  • Non-cancerous growths or uterine fibroids that cause heavy bleeding or pain
  • In endometriosis, the lining of the uterus grows outside.
  • Chronic pelvic pain interfering with your daily life
  • Uterine, cervical, or ovarian cancers
  • Uterine prolapse, or the uterus slipping down from its normal position

Types of Hysterectomy

  • Total Hysterectomy: Removes the entire uterus and cervix, commonly used for conditions like fibroids or cancer.
  • Partial (Subtotal) Hysterectomy: Removes only the upper part of the uterus, leaving the cervix intact; often used to treat fibroids or noncancerous conditions like endometriosis.
  • Radical Hysterectomy: Involves removal of the uterus, cervix, part of the vagina, and surrounding tissues (ovaries, fallopian tubes, lymph glands), primarily to treat certain cancers.

Hysterectomy Surgery : Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation For Hysterectomy

  • A comprehensive medical evaluation, blood tests, and imaging studies are required to assess overall health and determine the surgical requirements.
  • Instructions are given by the surgeon to fast, typically starting the night before the surgery.

During the Hysterectomy Procedure:

  • Once in the procedure room, you will be administered general anesthesia to reduce pain.
  • A horizontal incision is made in your lower abdomen along the pubic hair, or bikini, line. Or, a vertical incision is made above or below your belly button, then down to right above the pubic bone.
  • Followed by the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and/or fallopian tubes being removed, and the incisions are closed.

Recovery from a Hysterectomy

You may require 2-3 days of hospital stay. The recovery period may vary from individual to individual; however, the ideal healing period ranges from 6 weeks to much longer. It is normal to have vaginal bleeding and discharge for 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. The discharge and bleeding should gradually decrease.

  • Keep your incision area clean and dry, and also avoid swimming for a few weeks.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for several weeks.
  • Avoid sexual activity for at least 6 weeks, as suggested by your doctor
  • Take the prescribed antibiotics and pain medications as directed.
  • Watch for signs of complications, such as pain, fever, and heavy vaginal bleeding, along with redness and swelling at the incision site, and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Attend regular follow-ups.

Post-Procedure Care:

Following hysterectomy procedure, the patient is asked to remain in the hospital for 2 days. A complete recovery can take about 6 weeks. It is normal to have vaginal bleeding and discharge for 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. The discharge and bleeding should gradually decrease. For 6 weeks after surgery,  strenuous exercise, lifting heavy objects, and sexual activity should be avoided.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hysterectomy procedure offers relief from chronic pain, heavy bleeding, and other symptoms that are caused by diseases like uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and other gynaecological conditions. This procedure is also done as a preventive measure, minimising the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer.

In a hysterectomy operation, both the uterus and cervix are removed, which stops the menstrual cycle and eliminates the ability to become pregnant. If the ovaries are also removed during the procedure, hormonal levels can drastically decline. This sudden change in hormone levels may lead to common bodily changes such as decreased energy levels, mood swings, and changes in bone health.

Hysterectomy is a surgery to remove the uterus and cervix through the incision done in the abdomen. The patient is required to stay longer in the hospital if the surgery is performed by open method. In the case of robotic and laparoscopic procedures, the recovery time and time taken to return to routine are greatly reduced.

An abdominal hysterectomy procedure is often necessary for treating conditions such as large uterine fibroids, severe endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, or cancer of the uterus, cervix, or ovaries when other treatment options are proved ineffective.

Performed by experienced surgeons in a well-equipped facility. While rare, some post-surgical complications such as bleeding, delayed healing, and slow recovery at the incision site can occur. However, these issues are generally manageable with appropriate care.

A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgery that uses small incisions and a camera to guide the removal of the uterus and cervix through the abdomen. The whole uterus or womb (and sometimes the fallopian tubes and ovaries) is removed via four small incisions or cuts in the abdomen during laparoscopic hysterectomy, also known as “keyhole surgery.”

The indications for a hysterectomy include conditions such as large uterine fibroids, severe endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, uterine prolapse, and certain gynaecologic cancers.

Recovery after a hysterectomy involves a hospital stay of 2-3 days and several weeks of rest at home. Full recovery usually takes about 6–8 weeks, during which patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activities, and sexual intercourse.
