What is Ovarian Cystectomy?
An ovarian cystectomy is a surgical procedure to remove ovarian cysts, which are sacs on the ovary that often resolve without treatment. This procedure can be done laparoscopically (using a laparoscope for minimal invasiveness and easier recovery) or via open surgery (with a large incision), which is necessary if the cyst is large or cancer is suspected. Surgery is recommended if the cyst persists, grows, or causes severe pain. Ovarian cysts are commonly caused by hormonal disorders, ovulation, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and cancer.
Types Of Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cyst types are as follows:
- Functional cysts (harmless): These include follicular and corpus luteum cysts.
- Non-functional cysts (benign or malignant): These include dermoid, cystadenomas, endometriomas, and Brenner tumors.
