Haemorrhoidectomy Overview
In a haemorrhoidectomy, a laser cauterization technique is used to safely burn and remove either extensive or severely swollen veins in the anus. Alternatively, the surgeon may use a precise laser to treat haemorrhoids and avoid the nearby tissues.
Patients who need haemorrhoidectomy surgery to remove either external or internal haemorrhoids include patients who have thrombosed, strangulated, or mixed haemorrhoids; patients with a family history; someone who experienced strained bowel movements; and postural pressure for sitting for longer hours.
There are two subtypes of laser haemorrhoidectomy, which include haemorrhoidal laser procedure (HeLP) and laser hemorrhoidoplasty (LHP). Apart from the laser method, there are four other types of Haemorrhoidectomy surgeries:
Milligan-Morgan (open haemorrhoidectomy)
Stapled hemorrhoidopexy
Ferguson (closed haemorrhoidectomy)
Infrared or electrical coagulation.

Haemorrhoidectomy: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Pre-Surgery: The patients are appointed to pre-assessment clinical sessions to thoroughly discuss their medical condition and past medical history and determine whether the patient is medically fit for the treatment and its aesthetics.
Haemorrhoidectomy Procedure: One or two incisions are made around the haemorrhoids based on the extent and severity of the condition, followed by the tying up of the swollen vein and promoting the stoppage of blood. Then, the surgeon removes the haemorrhoids using instruments like a scalpel, scissors, or a laser. Later, the wound is either left open to heal on its own, partially closed, or completely closed with stitches to promote faster healing.
Post-Surgical: Depending on the patient’s health, they are instructed to stay in the hospital for initial recovery within the first 24 hours. Their recovery varies from person to person, but these are a few very common haemorrhoidectomy recovery tips:
Pain and itching go away immediately post-surgery.
Avoid heavy lifting for a week or two, based on the patient’s convenience.
Take the doctor’s prescribed stool softeners and painkillers.
After the first bowel movement, there can be some bleeding from the rectal area.
The patients are usually instructed to rest for one to two weeks.
