What is Tympanoplasty?
Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at repairing the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and restoring hearing function. It involves grafting tissue onto the perforated or damaged eardrum to close the hole and improve hearing. Tympanoplasty indications include chronic eardrum perforations, hearing loss from the middle ear, persistent ear infections, traumatic ear injuries, congenital ear defects, trauma-related damage, and the need for a revision surgery.
Types of Tympanoplasty procedures:
- Type I Tympanoplasty: This type repairs small perforations in the eardrum.
- Type II Tympanoplasty: It addresses larger perforations and may involve reconstructing the middle ear bones (ossicles).
- Type III Tympanoplasty: This procedure is necessary for addressing damage to the eardrum and middle ear structures, often resulting from trauma or chronic infections.
The choice of endoscopic tympanoplasty technique can vary based on the location and size of the rupture, such as (Postauricular: behind ear incision), (Endaural: above ear canal), and (Transcanal: through ear canal access) approaches.
