EVLT Surgery: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Before Endovenous Laser Therapy

The preparation for EVLT of the saphenous vein involves a thorough history and physical examination, disclosure of medical conditions, restrictions on blood-thinners, and signing a consent form after understanding the procedure’s risks and benefits.

During the EVLT Procedure

The procedure entails lying down while the doctor uses ultrasound guidance. Anesthesia is administered to the affected leg, followed by a small puncture in the vein. A catheter with a laser heat source is inserted into the vein, sealing it shut. Eventually, the vein shrinks and fades, enabling efficient blood circulation through healthy veins.

After the Surgery

Endovenous laser ablation is an out-patient procedure that typically takes less than an hour. Post-surgery, monitoring will be conducted. The patient will be required to wear a compression stocking for a week after the procedure.

EVLT Recovery Time

The procedure is an outpatient one, requiring no hospitalization, allowing the individual to resume normal activities and return to work within a day or two. A complete recovery might be seen in 2–3 weeks.

Post-procedure care

Postoperative care for endovenous laser therapy includes:

• Usage of medications for pain and swelling in treated legs.
• Application of ice packs for 10 minutes at a time for a few days to manage bruising, swelling, or pain.
• Wearing compression stockings for a few days to weeks to prevent blood pooling or clotting.
• Walk for 10 to 20 minutes three times a day for a couple of weeks, but avoid strenuous activities.
• Avoid standing, sitting, or lying down for long periods.
