Radical excision of vascular malformation is a surgical procedure to remove various vascular malformations and reconstruct the site using the skin from other body parts. Vascular malformations are usually congenital and could appear at any time if aggravated by factors such as surgeries or pregnancy. In radical excision, removing the whole of the vascular malformation is important; otherwise, these malformations can recur. Surgical excision is preferred in cases where other techniques such as embolisation(blocking blood vessels to inhibit blood supply to abnormally growing cells) have failed or could not be performed.
Before surgery: Before surgery, the doctor will recommend blood tests to assess the patient’s medical condition and will ask him to undergo a pre-anaesthesia check-up (PAC). Once the PAC approval is received, the doctor will inquire about the patient’s current medications and could ask him to stop taking certain medications. The patient will also undergo imaging procedures such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI, depending upon the location of the vascular malfunction to assess the site of surgical intervention.
During surgery:Â The patient will be given general or local anaesthesia depending on the location of the vascular malfunction.
Once the patient is unconscious, the surgeon will make an excision in the area with the vascular malformation. Following the excision, the reconstruction is performed usually using the skin from the forearm or the thigh region.
A wound drain is sewn in place during the surgery. The wound drain is attached to a drainage bag. As the name suggests, the wound drain assists with the drainage of any urine or blood from the kidney that may ooze from the area
After surgery: After the surgery, the patient’s vital parameters will be closely monitored for 12-24 hours. After he regains consciousness, he will be moved to the ward/room in the hospital.

Risk factors for excision surgery include the following:
Complications
Yes, vascular malformations can be removed using the radical excision procedure. The complete removal of the vascular malformations is imperative to avoid the chances of recurrences. The surgical removal of vascular malformation in fingers and toes is successful with almost no complications. It is also useful in treating massive malformations.
Vascular malformations are different from vascular tumours. Vascular malformations are characterised by abnormal blood vessels or lymph nodes that have no signs of neoplasm in the endothelial cells. On the other hand, vascular tumours have a neoplastic abnormal growth in the cells involving blood vessels and/or lymph nodes. Book an appointment.
Venous malformations can grow back even after the treatment, although the chances of regrowth are quite less if the malformation is completely removed. However, in case of incomplete removal, they can grow back again. Sometimes, the malformations can regrow due to stressful treatments. Hence, regular follow-ups are required to assess the condition and appropriate management.
The majority of the vascular malformations are genetic and these could involve arteries, veins, lymph nodes, or both lymph nodes and blood vessels. These are usually considered to be associated with abnormalities in the development process of these blood vessels and lymph nodes. However, one might not feel any symptoms for years until these malformations are aggravated.
It is advised not to eat anything at least 6-8 hours before the surgery. The doctor may also recommend taking certain medications, such as anti-anxiety, to calm the patient. The patient should also discuss with the doctor if he is taking any medications that affect blood clotting.
Depending upon the location of the radical excision, the patient needs to abstain from strenuous activities such as weight lifting, heavy exercises, or running for at least 4-6 weeks. One should not overexert himself and take proper rest while the body recovers from the surgery. The patient can discuss with the doctor the scope of activities he can perform.
