What is Cytoreductive Therapy?
Debulking cytoreductive surgery is a common treatment for ovarian cancer that aims to remove as much cancerous tissue from the patient’s abdomen as possible, ensuring no tumour nodules larger than 1 centimetre in diameter remain. This procedure is vital for patients whose cancer has spread throughout the abdomen and has the potential to improve patient survival rates. Gynaecological oncologists utilise a microscope to examine the organs and tissues removed during the debulking cytoreductive surgery, assessing whether additional ovarian cancer surgery or other treatments are necessary and gaining further insights into the cancer itself.
Depending on the type, stage, and location of the cancer, there are many types of debulking surgery. Seven types are oophorectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy, hysterectomy, omentectomy, lymph node biopsy, abdominal fluid biopsy, and bowel resection.
