Aorta is the main artery that supplies oxygen-rich blood into the body. Aortic dissection is a tear in the layers of the vessel wall due to which the normal blood flow to parts of the body may be slowed or stopped, or the aorta may rupture completely. Aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition that can cause sudden death if it is not treated immediately.

Treatment of aortic dissection depends upon the location of the tear and dissection. Immediate surgery is needed for Type A aortic dissection (part of the aorta close to the heart). Aortic root replacement is a procedure in which the aortic root and the valve are repaired and replaced with a tube-like graft.
