Total knee replacement (TKR), also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged knee joints with artificial joints known as prostheses. This surgery is recommended for patients who have severe arthritis or a severe knee injury.
TKR is a major procedure that is usually performed under general anaesthesia and takes one to two hours. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision over the knee, removes diseased and damaged bone and cartilage while leaving healthy bone intact, and places the implants. Knee replacements improve quality of life by relieving pain and restoring mobility. However, as with any surgery, there are risks associated with TKR, including blood clots, nerve damage, and an increased risk of infection.
Recovery from knee replacement surgery can take weeks or months, depending on the patient’s age and overall health. Following surgery, the patient is advised to undergo physical therapy to help regain strength and mobility in the replaced knee joint. Pain relievers may also be prescribed to help with any discomfort experienced during the recovery process.
