A bilateral total knee replacement is a procedure that replaces both of the patient’s knees at the same time. It is recommended for patients with severe arthritis in both knees or other conditions that have caused significant damage to the knee joint. The procedure involves removing the damaged knee joints from both knees and replacing them with artificial knees called prostheses.
After the surgery, the patient will have to use crutches or a walker for a few weeks, and physical therapy will be advised to regain strength and mobility. Pain medications can also be given for a few weeks to manage any pain and discomfort. The surgery relieves pain and improves movement, allowing the patient to resume normal activities in three to six weeks.
Since knee replacement is a major surgery, complications like infections, blood clots, nerve damage, and failure of the artificial joint are possible. Hence, it is important to discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with a doctor before making a decision.
Mrs. Sugandha Subhash from Maharashtra successfully underwent Bilateral Total Knee Replacement Surgery at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Venuthurla Ram Mohan Reddy, Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.
