The process and time frame of external foreign body extraction are completely dependent on the nature of the organism, the type of agent causing the dysfunction, the location, and any possible effects on the surrounding tissue. External foreign body—any object that has penetrated the body but still remains superficial or contained in an external cavity like the eye, the ear, the nose, the stomach, or just below the skin. Removal usually should occur immediately if the foreign body is causing pain, discomfort, functional impairment, or risk of infection, tissue injury, or neurovascular failure. The removal of foreign bodies is important because organic foreign bodies (wood splinters, plant material) are more likely to produce infection or inflammation, and it is imperative, therefore, that the extraction take place as soon as possible. External foreign body removal procedures vary based on the object’s location and characteristics. For superficial skin, thorough cleaning, local anesthesia, and sterile tools are used. Eye, ear, and nasal foreign bodies can be removed using irrigation, suction, or manual extraction.
Removal of a foreign body from the airway is an important procedure when an object becomes lodged in the person’s windpipe (trachea) or breathing tubes (bronchi), resulting in partial or complete obstruction of the airway. This provides a medical emergency, most commonly demonstrated by sudden choking, coughing, difficulty breathing, or wheezing, and is generally more common in young children who place small items in their mouths and cannot coordinate swallowing yet. Additionally, in adults, an object can become lodged during meals, particularly in those who have a central nervous system disorder or impaired swallowing reflex. Immediate removal is vital to restore breathing. Depending on the age, timing of foreign body removal, and object, many complications and consequences can occur after the foreign body is released in the airway, such as respiratory arrest, pneumonia, or even death.
Mrs. Dolli Bibi from West Bengal successfully underwent Foreign Object Extraction at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, under the supervision of Dr. Gonuguntla Hari Kishan, Consultant Interventional Pulmonologist & Dr. Belgundi Preeti Vidyasagar, Consultant Interventional Pulmonologist.
