Humerus Plating Surgery: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation for Humerus Plating

Imaging tests, such as X-rays, CT, or MRI scans, are performed to evaluate the fracture and properly plan the procedure. Additionally, the patient is asked to refrain from taking any medications that could interfere with the procedure, such as blood thinners, and is instructed to fast for a few hours.

During the Surgery

Once in the procedure room, you will be administered general anesthesia to reduce the likelihood of experiencing pain during the procedure. Making small skin incisions near the fracture site allows access to the upper arm, where the fractured bone is repositioned and the broken pieces are realigned (a process known as the reduction step). Additionally, metal plates and screws are used to secure the bone fragments, further stabilizing and holding the fractured bone in place. Finally, the incision is sealed with sutures or staples after the metal has been firmly positioned and the bone has been properly aligned.

Recovery after Humerus Plating

The patient may require a few days of hospital stay. The recovery period may vary from individual to individual; however, the ideal healing period ranges from several weeks to months.

Precautions after Humerus Plating

• Keep your incision area clean and dry.
• Keep wearing the sling for additional support.
• Watch for signs of complications, such as severe pain, swelling, and redness around the incision site, and contact your doctor immediately.
• Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for several weeks.
• Focus on a healthy diet that includes calcium-rich foods such as milk, yogurt, and green leafy vegetables.
• To increase flexibility or regain mobility, do mild physical therapy or exercises as suggested by your doctor.
• Take your pain medications as directed to ease discomfort.
• Follow up to know the healing status.
