Gastric Band: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation for stomach banding

Prior to surgery, patients are enrolled in a bariatric surgery instructional session, which involves dietary counseling, physical exams, blood testing, stomach imaging, endoscopy, ceasing smoking, losing weight, and adhering to blood-thinning prescription guidelines. Before the surgery, patients will be given specific food restrictions.

During the procedure

Bariatric Surgeons make small incisions in the abdomen to insert tools and a camera, performing a procedure under general anesthesia. They place an adjustable silicone band around the stomach’s upper portion, containing a balloon filled with saline. A short tube with a port is attached to the balloon within the gastric band, positioned beneath the patient’s skin.

After Gastric Banding

After surgery, doctors can adjust the band’s tension using a syringe. Patients who don’t lose weight may need to have their bands tightened. Patients typically return home the same day after surgery, with most taking their regular work after a week. They will be on a liquid diet for the first week or two, with a schedule provided by the surgery team.

Gastric Band Recovery

Most people can return to normal activities after two days; however, some may need to take a week off from work. However, the treatment and recovery period are quite brief, like with other bariatric procedures. but the recovery mainly depends on the patient’s overall health condition.

Post-procedure care

The post-procedure care involves dietary suggestions, activity restrictions, prescription pain medications, follow-up appointments, and overall monitoring.
