What is bronchoscopy test?
Bronchoscopy, a procedure utilizing a bronchoscope to examine the larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs, is crucial for diagnosing and treating lung diseases. The bronchoscope, a thin, flexible or rigid tube with a camera, is inserted through the nose or mouth into the lungs. Introduced by Shigeto Ikeda in 1966, flexible bronchoscopy has since become indispensable in clinical practice, aiding in the diagnosis and treatment of various lung abnormalities. Rigid bronchoscopy is also valuable for specific therapeutic interventions.
Types of bronchoscopy
Bronchoscopy is mainly categorized into two types such as:
Flexible bronchoscopy
The most common type of bronchoscopy involves a small, flexible tube with a light source and camera at its tip. This tube is inserted through the mouth or nose, passed down the trachea, and into the bronchi.
Rigid bronchoscopy
In rigid bronchoscopy, a wider tube is utilized, though less common than flexible bronchoscopy. It may be necessary for obtaining larger tissue samples or removing objects from the airways.
Additional types of bronchoscopy, including fiberoptic bronchoscopy and EBUS bronchoscopy, are also utilized to diagnose and treat various lung and pulmonary abnormalities.
