Types of Prostate Cancer Surgery

  • Radical Prostatectomy: This procedure aims for the removal of the entire prostate gland that includes the surrounding tissues as well as the seminal vesicles. There are three types of radical prostatectomy:
    a) Open Prostatectomy: The surgeon makes a large incision in the abdomen to remove the prostate cancer. There are two kinds of approaches made in order to make this happen – Radical Retropubic Approach and Radical Perineal Approach.
    b) Laparoscopic Prostatectomy: The surgeon uses a small incision with specialised instruments to remove the prostate cancer.
    c) Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy: The surgeon utilises the robotic arms in a minimally invasive setting to deliver accurate results.
  • Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP): the surgeon inserts a resectoscope through the patient’s urethra to excise the excessive cancer tissue to let the urine flow. This surgery is performed in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
  • Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP): This surgery involves the laser removal of the enlarged prostate cancer with less bleeding and quick recovery.
  • Cryosurgery: The surgeon destroys the cancerous cells by freezing them in low-risk, early or recurrent prostate cancer stages.

FAQ's

To possibly avoid having prostate cancer, you must maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise, engage in regular physical activity, focus on fruits and vegetables, and limit meat and processed food consumption. On the other hand, consume lycopene- and omega-3-fatty-acid-rich foods and green tea daily.

As they are often slow-growing and asymptomatic for a prolonged period, their detection makes it a challenge. It is also saddening that prostate cancer is common nowadays. However, it can be cured if identified and treated at an early age via chemotherapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy or prostatectomy. Moreover, an enlarged prostate cancer can be reduced with radiation therapy and then be excised completely through prostatectomy.

The five warning signs include frequent urination at night, difficulty in controlling urination, blood in urine or semen, pain or burning sensation during urination or ejaculation, and rarely, erectile dysfunction.

As there is no significantly paramount cause for prostate cancer, it is observed in many cases that age and hormonal changes play a vital role in the development of conditions such as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) or prostate cancer.

To diagnose prostate cancer, the patient must go through initial screening and suspicion; the surgeon may perform a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test or a digital rectal exam. It can also be diagnosed via proper diagnostic tests such as transrectal ultrasound (TRUS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or through an MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsy.

The four main stages of prostate cancer include stage 1 (localised, not yet spread), stage 2 (cancer matures and at more risk of spreading), stage 3 (spreads in the nearby lymph nodes and seminal vesicles), and stage 4 (metastasized to other body parts like bones and other organs)
