First-Ever Rare Successful Double Lung Transplantation in India at Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad

This marks the Fourth Successful Rare Double Lung Transplant case in the world, offering a new lease on life to a young man and a proud moment in the history of lung transplantation in our country.

Hyderabad, October 12, 2023: Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad, successfully performed a double lung transplant for a 23-year-old male who had been battling for his life for over a month. He had consumed poison, which had severely damaged both his lungs, as well as his kidneys and liver. The poison compound responsible for his condition is known as Paraquat, a widely used, Highly Toxic Contact Herbicide.

This groundbreaking procedure is the first-ever successful double lung transplantation in India, performed at Yashoda Hospitals, saving the life of a 23-year-old man suffering from paraquat poisoning and resulting pulmonary fibrosis.

“Mr. Rohit, a 23-year-old young man from Mahabubabad district near Warangal, Telangana, was admitted to Yashoda Hospitals. He was placed on a mechanical ventilator and subsequently placed on extracorporeal support (ECMO). He was on ECMO for more than 15 days, and with no improvement in his condition, the decision was made to proceed with a lung transplant,” stated Dr. Pavan Gorukanti, Director of Yashoda Group of Hospitals.

“This type of lung transplantation, successfully performed in India for the first time in this condition, is exceedingly rare, with only four cases documented worldwide. We believe our case represents the longest survivor in India. The patient was on ECMO for nearly a month, endured multiple bloodstream and respiratory infections before the transplant,” explained Dr. Hari Kishan Gonuguntla, Senior Interventional Pulmonologist at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad.

The patient received donor lungs from a cadaveric brain-dead donor as part of the state-run Jeevandan organ donation initiative. The procedure was carried out by a team led by Senior Interventional Pulmonologist Dr. Hari Kishan Gonuguntla, along with Thoracic Surgeons Dr. K. R. Bala Subrahmanyam, Dr. Manjunath Bale, Dr. Chetan, Dr. Sricharan, and Dr. Vimi Vargehese, along with their team at Yashoda Hospitals, Secunderabad.

The patient was recently discharged and no longer requires oxygen. He is able to carry out his daily activities without any difficulty and is under the close follow-up care of the lung transplant team.

Rohit’s successful double lung transplant at Yashoda Hospitals marked a historic moment in Indian medical history. As he walked out of the hospital, breathing freely, he knew he had been given a second chance at life. His remarkable recovery highlighted the importance of organ donation and inspired hope in many. The medical team’s dedication and the selflessness of the donor’s family were celebrated. Rohit embraced his newfound lease on life with gratitude and a renewed sense of purpose, reminding us all that miracles can happen, and life is a precious gift.
