Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a minimally invasive spinal surgery used to treat damaged or degenerated spinal discs. Disc degeneration can be caused by age, genetic factors, trauma, or normal wear and tear, and it can result in severe pain, swelling, numbness, weakness, and loss of mobility.
The damaged disc is removed and replaced with an implant filled with bone graft during the procedure. The implant aids in the realignment of the vertebrae and the relief of pain and pressure caused by compressed nerves. It also helps to stabilise the spine and prevents movement between the vertebrae.
When compared to open surgery, TLIF has fewer complications, a lower risk of infection, and minimal scarring, as well as a shorter recovery period. Following the procedure, you may experience mild pain and weakness, but you will be able to resume normal activities within a few weeks.
