Pyelonephritis is a bacterial infection of the kidneys that causes inflammation and is most commonly caused by a specific type of urinary tract infection. Symptoms may include fever, frequent urination, and back pain. Treatment often requires hospitalisation and includes antibiotics and pain medications.

Hydronephrosis is a condition that results in accumulation of excess fluid in a kidney due to a back-up of urine. It is caused by a blockage in the ureter (the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder) due to a kidney stone, infection, enlarged prostate or a tumour. Symptoms include urinary difficulty and pain in the side, abdomen, or groin. Antibiotics may be used to treat the underlying infection, and in severe cases, urine may need to be drained from the bladder or kidney.

Sepsis, also known as septicemia, is a life-threatening complication that occurs when chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight an infection trigger inflammation throughout the body, causing damage to multiple organs and may even result in death. Symptoms include fever, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, fast heart rate, and mental confusion, and treatment includes administration of antibiotics and intravenous fluids.
