Sigmoid colon carcinoma, a type of cancer, can sometimes lead to intestinal obstruction, a serious complication. The primary cause is the growth of a cancerous tumor within the sigmoid colon, which can narrow the colon’s passageway, causing a partial or complete blockage that prevents stool from passing normally. Symptoms include abdominal pain, abdominal distention, nausea and vomiting, constipation, and obstructive stools. Diagnosis involves a combination of medical history, physical exam, and imaging tests like CT scans, X-rays, and colonoscopy. These tests help visualize the tumor and obstruction, as well as take a biopsy for further analysis.
The treatment for sigmoid colon cancer is based on various factors, including the cancer’s stage, the patient’s health, and individual factors. The main surgical procedure is a colectomy, which removes the cancerous portion of the colon and healthy tissue. If direct reconnection isn’t possible, a colostomy may be necessary. In cases where the cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes, these are removed during surgery. Surgical approaches can include open surgery or minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopic or robotic surgery. Other treatment options include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. The treatment plan is determined by a multidisciplinary team of specialists and is tailored to each patient. Regular follow-up care, including colonoscopies and imaging scans, is essential to monitor for recurrence.
