What is Varicocele & Why is Treatment Needed?
Varicocele is the state of abnormally dilated veins in the scrotum, and it affects 15% of adult men and 20% of adolescents. These varicoceles can lead to fertility issues, decreased testosterone production, or scrotal discomfort, so they are rarely treated unless a problem presents. In some cases, they can even cause azoospermia—a complete absence of sperm in the ejaculate.
Types of Varicocele Treatment
These veins are common and not dangerous, and most of them remain unnoticed or resolve spontaneously. To treat varicocele, there are three categories: varicocele embolization, laparoscopic varicocele ligation, and microsurgical varicocele ligation. Embolization includes the process of placing small coils in the abdomen veins, and laparoscopic ligation clips the veins. The varicocele ligation is a minimally invasive surgical technique, and the microscopic and laparoscopic types have a competitive edge over open methods of surgery.
