How Is Ureteroscopy Performed? Before, During and After.
Before undergoing ureteroscopy
- A urine test is done to check for infections.
- You may be advised to avoid urinating shortly before the procedure.
- Your doctor may recommend fasting and provide instructions on medications.
During ureteroscopy
- Local anesthesia, spinal anesthesia, or general anesthesia is administered.
- The ureteroscope is inserted through the urethra into the bladder and advanced into the ureter or kidney.
- Depending on the site and size of the stone, the best ureteroscopic method is decided.
- A temporary ureteral stent may be placed to help urine flow post-procedure.
After the procedure
- You may go home the same day or stay briefly for observation.
- Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infection.
- Drink plenty of fluids to help flush out stone fragments.
- You may notice:
- Mild pain or burning during urination
- Small amounts of blood in the urine
- Frequent urination — these are temporary side effects
- Applying a warm compress near the urethra may help relieve discomfort.
- If a stent is placed, your doctor will inform you when it needs to be removed.
