How is TRUS-guided biopsy performed?
Before TRUS-guided biopsy:
- The patient will need to inform the surgeon about his ongoing medicines and allergies, if any.
- The patient is asked about his medical conditions and any recent illnesses by the surgeon.
- The patient is advised to stop taking blood thinners at least 7-10 days before the procedure.
- The patient will have to start oral antibiotics before the procedure to prevent infection.
- It is advised to eat light meals before the procedure.
- The patient needs to empty his bowel entirely with the help of an enema before the procedure.
During Procedure:
- The patient will be given general anaesthesia and is made to lie on his left side with legs bent up towards the chest.
- The doctor will give a digital rectal exam (DRE) to check for any other issues.
- The urologist will insert the ultrasound scope into the rectum.
- With the guidance from the ultrasound images, the doctor will use a needle to take tissue samples from the prostate gland.
- The process will be repeated multiple times to obtain as many tissue samples from different areas as possible.
After TRUS Biopsy:
- After the procedure, the patient will be given a pad to wear to collect the residual blood from the rectum.
- The patient is required to rest and drink something before leaving.
- He is asked to drink plenty of fluids for the next 24 hours.
- The patient will be kept under observation for 24 hours.
