What is Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Rhinoplasty procedure, commonly known as a nose job aimed at altering the shape and size of the nose, primarily for cosmetic or functional reasons. It can enhance facial aesthetics, improve breathing, and address nasal structural issues. Qualified surgeons specializing in plastic or facial plastic surgery perform rhinoplasty. Ideal candidates should be in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations.
The procedure addresses various nasal concerns, including bulbous, upturned, hooked, or droopy noses, deviated septums, wide or narrow nostrils, bumps on the bridge, and blocked nasal passages. Rhinoplasty can be performed using two main techniques: open rhinoplasty procedure for major reshaping and closed rhinoplasty for minor adjustments.
The steps involved in the rhinoplasty procedure are as follows:
Before the Rhinoplasty Procedure
- Prior to procedure, it’s essential to adhere to your surgeon’s guidelines regarding diet, hydration, and medications.
- Typically performed on an outpatient basis, the surgeon begins by assessing the patient’s specific needs.
- Surgeons should ensure patient understanding of procedures, risks, and benefits.
- The surgeon and patient discuss the type of procedure to be undergone and then proceed further.
During the Rhinoplasty
- During the procedure, the patient receives general anesthesia, and then an incision is made on the inside nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or across the nose base (open rhinoplasty).
- Thereafter, the skin rose, covering the nasal bones and cartilage.
- Then reduction, addition, or rearrangement of underlying bone and cartilage.
- Finally, the skin replacement for nasal bones and cartilage takes place, followed by the minor stitches.
After the procedure
Following rhinoplasty surgery, a small plastic splint is worn for a week to minimize swelling and maintain the nose’s new shape. Cotton gauze is placed inside the nose, which can be removed within 24 to 48 hours, according to the surgeon’s instructions.
Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) Recovery time
- Rhinoplasty complete recovery can take up to a year.
- Swelling persists for 4 to 6 weeks, gradually decreasing after three months.
- During this period, the nose still heals, causing mild swelling.
- The surgeon’s clearance allows for the resumption of regular activities.
Post-procedure care
To ensure proper nose healing in the initial days after rhinoplasty surgery, apply cool compresses to cheeks or under eyes, avoid face impact, avoid excessive pressure on the nose bridge when wearing eyeglasses or sunglasses, keep your head elevated, minimize sun exposure, avoid blowing your nose, and avoid lifting heavy objects for a few weeks. If you feel sore, take over-the-counter pain medicines as directed by your surgeon.
