How is AV Fistula Surgery performed: Before, During and After.
Comprehensive preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care is crucial for successful AV fistula surgery and long-term dialysis access.
Pre-operative Care
Before AV fistula surgery, the patient undergoes a thorough medical evaluation to assess overall health and suitability for the procedure. A Doppler ultrasound or vascular mapping is performed to identify healthy veins and arteries. Blood tests may be advised, and medications such as blood thinners are reviewed. Patients are usually instructed to avoid injections, blood pressure measurements, or blood draws from the selected arm before surgery.
Intra-operative Care
The procedure is typically carried out under local or regional anesthesia. The surgeon carefully connects an artery to a nearby vein using sterile techniques to minimize the risk of infection. Blood flow is checked immediately after the connection to ensure proper circulation. Vital signs are continuously monitored throughout the surgery to maintain patient safety.
Post-operative Care
After surgery, the arm may be kept elevated to reduce swelling. The surgical site should be kept clean and dry. Patients are advised to check for a gentle vibration (thrill) over the fistula daily, which indicates good blood flow. Heavy lifting and pressure on the operated arm should be avoided. Simple hand exercises may be recommended to help the fistula mature. Regular follow-up visits are important to monitor healing and confirm readiness for dialysis use.
