What is Turbinoplasty ?
A nasal blockage that keeps patients from breathing or falling asleep is treated with turbinoplasty, also known as turbinate reduction surgery. Turbinates are in charge of humidifying and cleaning the air that passes through the nasal passage and into the lungs. But when the airway is disrupted by allergies or infections, these tiny structures inside your nose swell and grow larger. When initial treatments such as nasal sprays (steroids or antihistamines) fail to improve the condition, turbinoplasty is recommended, either alone or in combination with other surgeries like septoplasty, etc.
Types of turbinoplasty
While there are several types of turbinoplasty, all aim to reduce or remove excess soft tissue to improve breathing and the nasal airway.
- Cauterization: This procedure involves inserting a heated probe into the nose to shrink the turbinate tissues.
- Radiofrequency Ablation: This utilizes the thin probe that sends heat energy so as to shrink the swollen masses of turbinates.
- Microdebrider submucosal resection: This procedure entails creating an incision in the turbinates to remove the turbinate tissue

Turbinoplasty Surgery: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation for turbinoplasty
Certain tests, including imaging studies such as nasal endoscopy and physical examinations, are conducted prior to the procedure to view the turbinates. In addition, the patient is asked to discontinue taking certain medications, like blood thinners, and to provide a history of allergies and medical conditions, such as any bleeding disorders.
During the procedure
Once in the procedure room, you will be administered general anesthesia to reduce the likelihood of experiencing pain during the procedure. Tiny structures called turbinates are accessed by making small incisions inside the nostrils to shrink or remove the mass of soft tissues that have grown too much while the mucosal lining is still present to preserve its function.
Turbinoplasty Recovery
The patient may require a minimum of two days of hospital stay. The recovery period may vary from individual to individual; however, the ideal healing period ranges from 2 to 4 weeks.
