    What is a Tracheostomy Procedure?

A tracheotomy is a surgical incision made by the surgeon on the patient’s windpipe through the neck, and the procedure performed to open the airway and help them breathe is called a tracheostomy.
For a patient who has difficulty swallowing or has an upper airway obstruction either in their nose, mouth, or throat, then a tracheostomy is recommended. Also, this procedure is recommended for patients who previously had surgery on their larynx or pharynx and patients with lung conditions, injury, or swelling in their neck. There are two types of tracheostomy surgeries, namely, surgical, percutaneous, temporary, or permanent tracheostomy.

    Procedure Name Tracheostomy
Type of Surgery Minor/Minimally Invasive Surgery
Type of Anaesthesia Normally: General Anaesthesia Emergency: Local Anaesthesia in the Neck
Procedure Duration 30 Minutes to 1 Hour
    Recovery Duration 2 Weeks Minimum
    Tracheostomy: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Pre-Surgery: The surgeon will guide you every step of the way. After a thorough examination, if general anaesthesia is required, the patient will be advised to fast for a few hours before the procedure.

Tracheostomy Procedure: An incision will be made on the neck just below the Adam’s apple into the windpipe after the patient is laid comfortably on the operation table. The incision is then widened to create a hole large enough to insert a tracheostomy tube into the trachea and secured with a band around the neck. Then, if the patient is having trouble breathing, the doctor connects the tube to the machine that helps them breathe.

Post-Surgery & Recovery Phase: The patient is then kept in the observation room to monitor vital organs and initiate healing, and is instructed to communicate through writing. Follow the instructions on how to manage the treatment area and post-operative instructions. Hospital stays are only for 8–10 days to 2 weeks, based on the complexity of the treatment and the patient’s overall health.

    FAQ's

The longevity of a patient with a tracheostomy depends on several factors, including the patient's age, overall health, any underlying conditions, and lifestyle.

Reroute the patient's breathing during surgery when the upper airway is blocked or constricted, and treat chronic sleep apnoea and any lung-associated neuromuscular diseases.

Decannulation, or tracheostomy tube removal, is performed when the patient no longer requires the tube's assistance for breathing and has a normal flow to the lungs. Also, when the patient needs to cough strongly, has been on the ventilator for too long, or is conscious or alert.

A tracheostomy is conducted under general anaesthesia, resulting in a loss of sensation in the patient, which means no pain is felt during the procedure. However, pain and discomfort may arise afterwards around the treatment site when speaking, eating, and coughing. Take medication as instructed by your surgeons.

You may feel discomfort swallowing food, saliva, and coughing, and it may take some time to adjust. If this does not work, you may use a feeding tube or consult with a speech therapist to avoid regurgitation of food and liquids.
