What is a Tracheostomy Procedure?
A tracheotomy is a surgical incision made by the surgeon on the patient’s windpipe through the neck, and the procedure performed to open the airway and help them breathe is called a tracheostomy.
For a patient who has difficulty swallowing or has an upper airway obstruction either in their nose, mouth, or throat, then a tracheostomy is recommended. Also, this procedure is recommended for patients who previously had surgery on their larynx or pharynx and patients with lung conditions, injury, or swelling in their neck. There are two types of tracheostomy surgeries, namely, surgical, percutaneous, temporary, or permanent tracheostomy.
Procedure Name | Tracheostomy |
---|---|
Type of Surgery | Minor/Minimally Invasive Surgery |
Type of Anaesthesia | Normally: General Anaesthesia Emergency: Local Anaesthesia in the Neck |
Procedure Duration | 30 Minutes to 1 Hour |
Recovery Duration | 2 Weeks Minimum |
Tracheostomy: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Pre-Surgery: The surgeon will guide you every step of the way. After a thorough examination, if general anaesthesia is required, the patient will be advised to fast for a few hours before the procedure.
Tracheostomy Procedure: An incision will be made on the neck just below the Adam’s apple into the windpipe after the patient is laid comfortably on the operation table. The incision is then widened to create a hole large enough to insert a tracheostomy tube into the trachea and secured with a band around the neck. Then, if the patient is having trouble breathing, the doctor connects the tube to the machine that helps them breathe.
Post-Surgery & Recovery Phase: The patient is then kept in the observation room to monitor vital organs and initiate healing, and is instructed to communicate through writing. Follow the instructions on how to manage the treatment area and post-operative instructions. Hospital stays are only for 8–10 days to 2 weeks, based on the complexity of the treatment and the patient’s overall health.
