What is HoLEP Surgery?
Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate, commonly called HoLEP, is a prostate surgery that is similar to an open procedure and does not require any incisions. This is an effective treatment option for the enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is a minimally invasive procedure to treat the enlarged prostate. HoLEP preserves tissue removed for laboratory examination for other conditions, including prostate cancer.
The procedure involves using a laser to remove prostate tissue that blocks urine flow, followed by cutting the tissue into easily removable fragments. HoLEP, like other prostate laser surgeries, offers faster recovery and symptom relief compared to traditional prostate surgery methods.

Holmium Laser Prostate (HoLEP): Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation for Prostate Surgery
Before HoLEP surgery, essential tests, including blood, urine, and possibly X-rays, ensure safety and effectiveness. Following this, the procedure begins under general anesthesia.
What happens During HoLEP Procedure
During the procedure, a resectoscope is used to separate the core of the prostate from its outer border using a laser-fiber instrument. The tissue is then removed from the body using suction, and the inner prostate tissue is cut into small pieces.
After HoLEP Prostate Surgery
After tissue removal, the surgeon removes the resectoscope and inserts a urinary catheter. Most patients return home after a few hours, but some may need hospitalization for bleeding or other issues. The catheter is removed the day after surgery, unless bleeding is excessive or other concerns arise.
HoLEP Surgery Recovery
After surgery, individuals can walk, but they should avoid strenuous activities for two weeks and straddle activities for six weeks. Most can return to work within one to two weeks. However, it might take up to 12 weeks to completely recover.
How is life after HoLEP?
Follow the doctor’s instructions for catheter cleaning, maintain a healthy diet, drink fluids, avoid strenuous activity, and strain for 2-4 weeks post-surgery to prevent infection and promote healing.
