What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)?
The carpal tunnel syndrome is a passageway enclosed by bones, allowing tendons, nerves, and ligaments to pass through. One of the major nerves that gets affected during carpal tunnel syndrome is the median nerve, which is responsible for the movement of the forearm and imparts sensation to the fingers and palms.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that is an amalgamation of multiple symptoms, including pain, numbness, tingling sensation, and weakness of the forearm. It occurs in the carpal tunnel when something irritates or applies extra pressure on the median nerve that passes through the tunnel, sending irregular amounts of sensory impulses to the hands and wrists.
It is most commonly seen in people who face repetitive strain injuries, arthritis, sprains, wrist fractures, cysts on the hand, people under prolonged usage of vibrating power tools, pregnant women, and adults over the age of 40. Carpal tunnel syndrome is well categorized into three categories: mild, moderate, and severe.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Pre-Surgical Approach: Specialists diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome through physical exams and imaging tests like Tinel’s sign, X-ray, Phalen’s test, ultrasound, MRI, or EMG. Treatment begins with non-surgical methods; if symptoms persist, surgery may be recommended.
Procedure: Non-surgical treatments like splints, physical therapy, and posture changes may help, but if they fail, surgery is an option. Open surgery involves a single wrist incision under local anaesthesia, while the endoscopic approach uses small incisions with a camera under general anaesthesia, ensuring less pain and faster recovery.
Post-Surgery & Recovery Phase: The patient may experience slight tightness in the area of treatment, with some pain and discomfort. The specialists would suggest you wear braces for a week or two. It may take up to 4 to 5 months to allow the hand strength to fully recover.
