What is Burr Hole Surgery?
A burr-hole procedure is a surgical technique used to relieve pressure on brain tissue caused by fluid buildup or bleeding. It is commonly performed for conditions such as hydrocephalus, acute and chronic subdural hematomas, and certain infections that lead to pus accumulation around the meninges.
The meninges are thin layers of tissue composed of blood vessels that protect the brain. Head injuries or other conditions can damage these blood vessels, leading to bleeding and increased pressure. This occurs when blood or fluid collects beneath the dura mater, the outermost layer of the meninges, compressing brain tissue. A burr hole helps drain this excess fluid or blood, reducing pressure and preventing further complications.

Burr Hole: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation: Before the procedure, you may be advised to fast for a specific period. Also, certain diagnostic tests, such as CT scans, are performed to get details about the fluid buildup in the brain tissue. Certain medications, such as blood thinners & NSAIDs, have to be avoided for a few days before surgery. Habits such as smoking need to be stopped as they impair the healing process.
During the Procedure: In the procedure room, local or general anesthesia is administered through an IV, and a small area of the scalp is trimmed or shaved. A drill is used to create one or two small holes in the skull, exposing the dura mater. The accumulated fluid or blood is then drained using a suction device. The hole is either closed immediately or left connected to a temporary drainage tube. In some cases, a neuro endoscope may be used to visualize brain tumors and correct abnormalities with surgical tools.
Recovery: After surgery, you may need a few days of hospital stay. During the recovery process, you may experience symptoms like pain & swelling at the incision site, which get better in a few days.
Post-Procedure Care: Keep the incision clean, take prescribed medication, and adhere to activity restrictions. Attend follow-up appointments for monitoring and guidance.
