What is Burr Hole Surgery?
A burr-hole procedure is a surgical technique used to relieve pressure on brain tissue caused by fluid buildup or bleeding. It is commonly performed for conditions such as hydrocephalus, acute and chronic subdural hematomas, and certain infections that lead to pus accumulation around the meninges.
Why is Burr Hole Surgery Needed?
The meninges are thin layers of tissue composed of blood vessels that protect the brain. Head injuries or other conditions can damage these blood vessels, leading to bleeding and increased pressure. This occurs when blood or fluid collects beneath the dura mater, the outermost layer of the meninges, compressing brain tissue. A burr hole helps drain this excess fluid or blood, reducing pressure and preventing further complications.
