What is Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)?
Orthopedic injuries, such as moderate-to-severe osteoarthritis, ligament injuries, and tendon injuries, impair the body’s ability to heal and regenerate. Therefore, a patient’s bone marrow is used to create a bone marrow concentrate (BMAC), a solution containing healing or regenerative stem cells. Recent medical developments have made it easier to obtain the cells and significantly less painful to perform the BMAC procedure than in previous years.

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate(BMAC): Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation for BMAC
Before the procedure, the healthcare professional understands your medical & social history, such as any existing bleeding disorders, allergies to medications, & habits such as smoking & drinking alcohol. The patient will be asked to stop using certain medications that might affect the procedure.
During the procedure
Once in the procedure room, you will be administered local anesthesia to numb the lower back region to reduce the likelihood of causing pain during the procedure. The small liquid portion of bone marrow, known as the bone marrow aspirate, is then extracted from the back of the hip bone using a tiny needle. A concentrated solution of healing cells—stem cells and growth factors—is then obtained by centrifugation and injected into the targeted joint to encourage the healing process. The injection of BMAC solution into the injured joint space can be guided with the use of imaging techniques like fluoroscopy or ultrasound.
Recovery After Bmac Surgery
Although each person’s recovery phase may differ, weeks to months may be the ideal time frame for healing. During the recovery period, the individual may experience pain at the injected site that might subside over a period. However, get in touch with your physician immediately if you suffer from chronic pain, swelling, or redness.
Post-Op Care:
- Avoid activities that strain the body for a few days.
- Apply an ice pack at the incision site to reduce pain & swelling.
- Follow the instructions regarding the medication use.
- Engage in specific exercises as prescribed by your physician.
- Follow-up for monitoring
