What is Bartholin Cyst?

Bartholin cyst surgery treats the lumps of abscess that build up in the Bartholin glands present near each side of the vaginal opening on the labia. This procedure aims to allow an easy flow of fluid from the glands. Women who experience a tender lump on either side of the vaginal opening or pain while having sexual intercourse, sitting, or walking are advised this surgery. Patients with intense amounts of pressure and excess fluid discharge are also recommended Bartholin gland surgery. There are six types of this surgery: marsupialization, incision and drainage, surgical excision, carbon dioxide laser-assisted surgery, home care, and medications.

Procedure Name Bartholin Cyst

Bartholin Cyst: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation for Bartholin Cyst Treatment

There are a few simple tests before the Bartholin gland surgery that a patient is required to go through, such as a full-body diagnosis (ultrasound and MRI) and biopsy to determine the severity of the condition. In women’s cases, a physical exam is also necessary. The surgeon’s advice is to fast the night before the surgery, only drink water three hours before the surgery, and refrain from certain medication at the time of surgery to reduce the risk of any complications.

During Marsupialization Procedure

Marsupialization is an outpatient surgery performed on an operating table and lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the patient to get discharged the same day. During the surgery, the patient is laid on their back with their legs bent at 90 degrees on the operating table. Local or general anaesthesia is then administered to numb the treating area, and the surgical site involving the perineum is sterilized.

The gynaecologist makes an incision along the length of the cyst, drains the abscess, and cleans it with antiseptic solutions. Subsequently, a thorough examination of the cyst wall is conducted to detect any indications of infection, followed by an inward folding of the cyst wall, which is then sutured with biodegradable sutures.

Post-Surgical and Recovery Phase

The patient may experience mild discomfort and pain for a few days after the surgery, so consume prescribed medications given by the surgeon. Take a well-medicated, proper rest and have a soaking warm bath for 1-2 days after the procedure and refrain from any sexual activity for a month after the surgery for proper vaginal care. Bartholin cyst surgery recovery time is 1-2 weeks.

FAQ's

No! Bartholin cyst removal is a minor, minimally invasive surgery that can be performed under local or general anaesthesia within 20 to 40 minutes and does not require any hospital stays.

The pain during or after the surgery depends on the pain threshold of the patient, the surgeon’s expertise, and the complexity of the procedure. However, the Bartholin cyst surgery is not painful, but the patient may experience mild discomfort during urination, and sitting for a longer period may cause discomfort. These signs are accompanied by slight nausea, lightheadedness, dizziness, and fever.

Yes! The reason is that high body temperatures and moisture get trapped within, and friction rubs against the genital area.

The excision of Bartholin cyst surgery cost in Hyderabad ranges from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000. It depends on the type of procedure, the patient’s condition, and the surgeon’s experience. Excision of the Bartholin gland approximately costs Rs. 38,000.

A cyst is better removed when excised surgically, but there are home remedies to naturally remove the Bartholin cyst that include letting it heal on its own, taking warm baths, and using a warm compress.

Yes! There are chances of Bartholin’s cyst reoccurring, but when the cysts appear quite often, the surgeon prefers removing the Bartholin gland.

The fastest way to cure a Bartholin gland is by allowing it to heal on its own using non-surgical approaches such as painkillers, warm baths, and warm compresses on the cyst.
