What is Bartholin Cyst?
Bartholin cyst surgery treats the lumps of abscess that build up in the Bartholin glands present near each side of the vaginal opening on the labia. This procedure aims to allow an easy flow of fluid from the glands. Women who experience a tender lump on either side of the vaginal opening or pain while having sexual intercourse, sitting, or walking are advised this surgery. Preparation for Bartholin Cyst Treatment
There are a few simple tests before the Bartholin gland surgery that a patient is required to go through, such as a full-body diagnosis (ultrasound and MRI) and biopsy to determine the severity of the condition. In women’s cases, a physical exam is also necessary. The surgeon’s advice is to fast the night before the surgery, only drink water three hours before the surgery, and refrain from certain medication at the time of surgery to reduce the risk of any complications.
During Marsupialization Procedure
Marsupialization is an outpatient surgery performed on an operating table and lasts for about 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the patient to get discharged the same day. During the surgery, the patient is laid on their back with their legs bent at 90 degrees on the operating table. Local or general anaesthesia is then administered to numb the treating area, and the surgical site involving the perineum is sterilized.
The gynaecologist makes an incision along the length of the cyst, drains the abscess, and cleans it with antiseptic solutions. Subsequently, a thorough examination of the cyst wall is conducted to detect any indications of infection, followed by an inward folding of the cyst wall, which is then sutured with biodegradable sutures.
Post-Surgical and Recovery Phase
The patient may experience mild discomfort and pain for a few days after the surgery, so consume prescribed medications given by the surgeon. Take a well-medicated, proper rest and have a soaking warm bath for 1-2 days after the procedure and refrain from any sexual activity for a month after the surgery for proper vaginal care.
