What is the ACDF (Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion) Surgery?
Also known as anterior cervical disc compression, this cervical spine surgery treats or removes damaged discs from the front of the neck, relieving pressure on the spinal cord. This helps alleviate pain, numbness, weakness, and tingling sensations. It is recommended for patients with herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, severe arm pain (worse than neck pain due to cervical stenosis), or those who haven’t responded to non-surgical treatments like medication and physical therapy.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Pre-Surgical Preparations: The surgical team will perform a physical exam, review the patient’s medication and suggest imaging tests, such as MRI, X-rays, or electrocardiogram (ECG). Moreover, patients are advised to consult their physician, avoid tobacco and alcohol before surgery, and stop certain medications to ensure optimal results.
ACDF Procedure Steps: The surgeon will administer the anaesthesia and make a 1-2 inch long horizontal incision in front of the neck, gently moving the trachea and oesophagus aside. Then, the damaged bone or bone spurs are removed, followed by the spinal fusion. A hollow metal ring filled with crushed bone (bone bank) replaces the removed discs. Finally, a metal framework is applied for stability, and the incision is stitched back.
Post-Surgery & Recovery Phase: Immediately after the surgery, an initial observation period begins, where the patient’s vital signs are monitored for the first 24 to 36 hours. Take prescribed medications and partake in physical therapy, rest as much as possible to restrict motion, and finally, let the incision site breathe with regular wound dressing.
