Types Of Shoulder Replacement Surgery
There are five main types of shoulder replacement surgery, each designed for a different pattern of joint damage and functional needs
1) Partial Shoulder Replacement (Hemiarthroplasty): In this technique, only the ball (head of the humerus) is replaced with an artificial component, while the natural socket is conserved. Partial shoulder replacement is utilized when the socket is mostly healthy.
2) Total Shoulder Replacement (Anatomic Total Shoulder Arthroplasty): Both the ball and socket of the shoulder joint are replaced with an artificial component. The implant design imitates the natural anatomy of the shoulder.
3) Reverse Shoulder Replacement: In this method, the normal ball-and-socket structure is reversed. The ball component is placed on the shoulder blade, and the socket is placed on the upper arm bone. Reverse shoulder replacement helps improve shoulder function in certain complex functions.
4) Shoulder Resurfacing: Instead of removing the entire joint surface, in shoulder resurfacing, only the damaged surface of the humeral head is capped with a smooth metal covering. This conserves more natural bone.
5) Revision Shoulder Replacement : This is a recurrent technique performed when the previous shoulder replacement has damaged, loosened, or failed and needs to be replaced or corrected.
